Actually the instructions for changing the telephone number format for your iPhone is quite straight forward, but you must remember that this is a hack and you should always take precautions before you begin. Like making backups of all files you are changing.

The file you need to modify is different depending on the firmware that is on your iPhone.

For iPhone with firmware 1.0.2 you need to modify the file with the following path:
<blockqoute>/System/Library/Frameworks/AddressBookUI.framework/ABPhoneFormats.plist</blockqoute>

For iPhone with firmware 1.1.1 You need to modify the file with the following path:
<blockqoute>/System/Library/Frameworks/UIKit.framework/PhoneFormats/UIPhoneFormats.plist</blockqoute>

In both cases you should copy the lines from the "HK" section and replace all the lines in the "US" section. Please note that there are different number of lines, but it is okay.

After you replaced the files on your iPhone restart it and the new telephone number format should take affect.

Good luck.

glad I found your blog... I'd say I'm still an inexperienced user of the iPhone as I've had it for just a lil under a week (did the unlock myself).

Thanks for the recommendation about Smartone's plans, although at this point, I am not sure if I can justify $38 + $118 a month, not to mention upgrading to a 3G voice plan (from cheapest $68 2G to cheapest $128 3G)... just to be able to check gmail / facebook... kind of doesn't make sense to have a 3G plan when the phone isn't 3G. I am interested in hearing your reports about your usage though.

And for everyone else who is interested in getting an iPhone, I agree with Vinko in that it is best to get one from an Amerifriend :) I walk into Sin Tat and I don't feel like I can trust anybody in there.

Vinko, I do have one question mate... that is you mentioned US phone number formatting... it is indeed quite annoying. Could you tell me how you changed it?

Since you seem quite experienced with the iPhone, if you ever have some time, you should post a blog entry about some of your favourite applications.

keep up the good work.

John,

Thank you for sharing.

My bill date with Smartone-Vodafone is the 11th so I will not be able to check my October bill online until Nov. 15th.

So far I have a total of 45MB of sent and received EDGE Network Data. I still have 12 more days to go in my bill cycle. These data usage span across all aspects of the iPhone functions and capabilities.

I also have a friend who does not have a 3G/2G Data plan from Smartone-Vodafone, but only the Internet Browsing as John had. Although, he does use the native email capability of the iPhone

As promise I will report back in November.

Hi all,

I got my bill after a month from smartone and it wasn't too bad. The data charges (non internet iN! plan) were quite high at $87 for roughly 1.4MB of data. The internet browsing was free as expected and hoped (!) and I did 49Mb of data during the month. For now i've disabled mail as gmail on the web browser isn't too bad; but may re-enable as gmail has imap now.

It's probably worth getting the minimum data plan as vinko suggested (for the odd case when you need it) and otherwise it's quite easy to survive just using the web bits (esp. as facebook etc. and many others have web2 iphone apps).

cheers,
john
