Highly Anticipated iPhone 3G Unlock Is Close But No Cigar

by Vinko on January 1, 2009

Pwnage Tool logoBack on Dec. 22nd the iPhoneDev Team had announced that they will release the software “carrier” unlock application on New Year’s Eve 2008 (US time). As a result many geek stayed in and waited for the release. Unfortunately, the eve of 2009 came and went without the promised software “carrier” unlock application.

Although, there are several clarifications on the pending release. One of which is its compatibility with the latest “baseband” software in the iPhone 3G. Meaning this upcoming software from the iPhoneDev Team WILL BE able to unlock the iPhone 3G with the latest software pre-installed; the ones purchased from Apple Store and other legitimate sources.

All we can do now is be patience and wait for the software to go though its final verifications and quality control. In the mean time, iPhone 3G users can get a head start by first restalling its iPhone to the Apple original iPhone firmware 2.2 using iTunes, then use the latest Pwnage Tool 2.2.1 to jailbreak it, in preparation of the “carrier” unlock software.

  • Will it work with the 3.0 OS due out tomorrow? I want to upgrade but want to stay unlocked as well!
  • No, it will not.

Do not upgrade just yet, if you need to unlock or jailbreak your iPhone.

The iPhone Dev Team has a new version Ultrasn0w that will be compatible with iPhone 3.0 firmware.
  • I took the sim out and restarted my iPhone and it is working fine now, many thanks.
  • Has anyone tried the yellowsn0w software? I run it last night on my iPhone 3G, firmware 2.2 and it unlocked it, but it wont pick up any signal, i'm trying to use it on TMobile.. any ideas anyone?
  • Are you using the latest version 0.9.6? The issue you'd described was occurring with the 0.9.4 and 0.9.2 versions, but was suppose to have been fixed in 0.9.6.

The previous solution was to take the SIM card out restart the iPhone and then place the SIM card back in before starting the iPhone again.
