iTunes 8.2.1 & Palm Pre & Jailbreak

by Vinko on July 16, 2009

iTunes LogoApple released a “minor” update to iTunes last night (July 15) and according to Apple’s Release Notes, there are suppose to be bug fixes.

With this latest version Apple has began its cat-and-mouse game with Palm. Among the fixes Apple mentioned for this version of iTunes is:

iTunes 8.2.1 provides a number of important bug fixes and addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices

We will have to wait and see what Palm will do next. My guess is that they will do nothing and hope that Palm Pre users will put pressure on Apple, but if I am right, I think that will be a mistake on Palm’s part. They should be focusing on the end user of their own product rather than begin a fight with Apple that they most likely do not have the time for.

As in the past, anyone who owns an iPhone and requires the hacks for jailbreaking and/or unlocking their iPhone should beware of any iTunes updates.

Applying the iTunes 8.2.1 update may have ill effects on your ability to jailbreak and/or unlock your iPhone using the iPhone Dev Team tools.

If you are one of these iPhone users please stay away from this version of iTunes for the time being.

I was able to still sync my jailbroken (with redsn0w 0.8) 3GS after updating to 8.2.1.. Not sure what ill effects I'd possibly see after this update. Just wanted to give you a heads up.
  • Replicant, thanks for sharing.

Although, having the ability to sync a jailbroken iPhone to iTunes 8.2.1 is not really what we need to worry about. It is wether iTunes 8.2.1 will affect the iPhone's ability to get into DFU mode then able to restore the iPhone with a custom built IPSW package.

As for your description about Smartone-Vodafone proxying traffic. This was a recent change end of last year which I complaint about in Smartone-Vodafone’s Stubbornness, then either by coincident or they were listening, a few days later they added an exception for Mobile Safari browser, Is Smartone-Vodafone Listening?. to remove the proxy.
  • I have no idea why Pre need use iTunes for the hotsync. It like depend on your enemy to do job for you and now you just can shut up when face off.
